Say No to Palm Oil

There’s so many reasons why we don’t like Palm oil, one of them being the deceit (ie. hiding Palm oil in labeling of cosmetics and foods with “Vegetable Oil”). Read on…
Here’s the scoop: Palm oil is often disguised, hidden behind many different ingredient names you probably don’t recognize when you go to your pantry or bathroom to check. To make things even more confusing for you as a consumer, sometimes companies will only disclose ingredients like “vegetable oil,” and though that vegetable oil blend likely contains palm oil, it’s not always a labeling requirement.

To help you navigate these confusing waters and avoid unwittingly voting for rainforest destruction with your dollars, here is a partial list of other names for palm oil-derived ingredients:*

  • PKO – Palm Kernel Oil
  • PKO fractionations: Palm Kernel Stearin (PKs); Palm Kernel Olein (PKOo)
  • PHPKO – Partially hydrogenated Palm Oil
  • FP(K)O – Fractionated Palm Oil
  • OPKO – Organic Palm Kernel Oil
  • Palmitate – Vitamin A or Ascorbyl Palmitate (NOTE: Vitamin A Palmitate is a very common ingredient in breakfast cereals and we have confirmed 100% of the samples we’ve investigated to be derived from palm oil)
  • Palmate
  • Sodium Laureth Sulphate (Can also be from coconut)
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphates (can also be from ricinus oil)
  • Sodium dodecyl Sulphate (SDS or NaDS)
  • Elaeis Guineensis
  • Glyceryl Stearate
  • Stearic Acid
  • Chemicals which contain palm oil
  • Steareth -2
  • Steareth -20
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
  • Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate (coconut and/or palm)
  • Hydrated palm glycerides
  • Sodium isostearoyl lactylaye (derived from vegetable stearic acid)
  • Cetyl palmitate and octyl palmitate (names with palmitate at the end are usually derived from palm oil, but as in the case of Vitamin A Palmitate, very rarely a company will use a different vegetable oil)

Through research we’ve found that Vitamin A Palmitate can be derived from any combination of vegetable oil such as olive, coconut, canola and/or palm oil. Though in all the cases we’ve documented, companies use palm oil to make derivatives like Vitamin A Palmitate, it can be tricky to know for sure.(1.)

Aromatic Essentials sources Vitamin A, from natural plant oils and especially Carrot seed oil. 

United as customers and citizens, we’re telling brands that orangutans and the forests they live in are worth more than the pennies they’re saving. We are demanding that they commit to only using responsible palm oil produced without causing the destruction of rainforests, carbon rich peat lands or the abuse of human rights.

 

The crisis caused by Conflict Palm Oil is urgent and the stakes are high.
Luckily there is something you can do about it.

Just so you know, Every single ingredient used in Aromatic Essentials has been investigated and absolutely contains no palm oil, even my vegetable glycerine is from Coconut not Palm. (Glycerin is most commonly derived from animal sources and if it’s not, it’s usually derived from Palm).

 

Although deforestation is a serious problem to the environment, it is better to do something than nothing. Supporting one business is better than none, would you agree? Many businesses can be found on the Cruelty free list which do not test on animals or contribute to the demise of certain species from greed. Its what it’s all about. Palm is the cheapest oil for soapmaking. Many will not even consider an alternative.

It is just one way we can help, and make a difference, not a drop of Palm oil here and no animal has suffered in any way from start to finish.

I applied for Palm oil free certification and my ingredients were approved, but it is costly and I believe the money is better spent on the exceptional ingredients. Aromatic Essentials already has Certified Cruelty free and Certified Vegan certification, which were affordable.

If your current NATURAL skincare is made and sold only in Australia, promises PALM OIL free, cruelty free, (Not tested on animals included), but doesn’t include this prized preservative, how can you know it’s true?

It would be too expensive though for a business minded person, to maintain all those features like Vegan, Palm oil free, Animal product free, Animal cruelty free, All Natural, Organic. Organic ingredients cost a fortune. So how can I?

Well, It’s ALL about the profit margin I guess. That’s why the discount offered to potential wholesalers has a limit at 20%. Ouch after that! but It is more important to me that people get to try something even a purist might be excited about. These products are made in small batches, all handmade (I wear food handling gloves of course) and with so much love.

Sounds nice hey? but they’re just fancy words, it’s what’s inside my plain looking jar or bottle that really counts. I love knowing so much about natural products and all the interests in my life; like Aromatherapy, Herbalism, Natural health remedies, Animal care, Gardening, harvesting herbs, body care, skin conditions and alternative health but I’d rather use the word Complimentary health because I’m into the whole “Let’s get back to nature” and simple, and real.
